Worming my flock today.

As I sit here infront of my computer eating my cornflakes, the chickens breakfast stands soaking in a black bucket.
With my young birds, I have well over a hundred chickens running around the place and so I've mixed 30 mils of panacur sheep wormer with about a quarter of a pint of corn oil and given it a really good shake in a pop bottle before mixing it into a bucket of mixed corn. The corn oil ensures that the grains are evenly coated with wormer.
This is a trouble free method of worming your birds. I'm not going to worm my laying flock, simply because there is a week or so's withdrawl period. These will be wormed later in the year after they've stopped laying.  :thumright:  :thumleft:

Please note everyone that panacur is not licenced for poultry and should be prescribed by a vet.
Flubenvet is the wormer recomended for poultry and available online.

I thought you didn't hold with worming your birds unless they showed signs of worms Bodger, are you sure their tummies will be alright

I've recently tried worming my girls with Verm-x, they hated it in the water, so in the end i soaked a piece of bread in milk and put the Verm-x on top.  As they had never had milky bread before they didn't notice and loved it.

If you check out the poultry information section on the forum, you'll see that the use of Panacur to worm chickens is comprehensivly and fairly covered.

I'm afraid I don't know how to use the bright red warning font button on here, and you are perfectly correct in your second assumption. I don't. :thumright:

i believe verm x isn't a wormer, it's more a preventative measure, correct me if i'm wrong.

Panacur is not licensed as a poultry wormer but it is obtainable through your vet. It has simply not been specifically tested for birds. It contains fenbendazole which kills the gizzard worm, but not its eggs. Two doses, spaced at 2-3 weeks are therefore needed to eradicate the pest. It is also less effective than Flubenvet and at killing gage worms .

Hands up if you've ever seen worms that have been passed following treatment with any wormer .

You shouldn't always believe what you see written in books either.
