Please does anyone have an answer?

We have 5 chickens. 2 we hatched (silkies) and 3 we bought together. Egyptian breed? One of them has this not nice eye. Closing up, crusting and leaving white crust on her wing where she's wiping it. She doesnt smell particularly good either (body odour) just started putting hay/ straw as bedding in, is this whats causing the problem or is that a stupid question. Can anyone enlighten me pls.

hi and welcome,

1st off, have you put hay or straw in? hay is not good for chooks, can cause compacted crops.

as for the poorly one, does she have any symtoms of a cold, such as heavy breathing or a runny nose?

Hi GG.
have you checked her over to see if there's any injury that might be infected ?
Doesn't sound too good, but as Babe said, could be cold. Apparently you can check their temperature by feeling under the wing where it joins the body and compare between the smelly one and one of the less smelly ones.

Could be a form of conjunctivitis caused by dust or mites in the hay.  Try cleaning eye and using dust extracted shavings for bedding & see if it starts to clear up.

It could well be conjunctivits general. Try pathing it with tepid weak tea.

Hi All

Thanks for the helpful (and even the not so helpful replies, laugh... I nearly did... off to that step of shame Bodger   )...

The last week or two we have started using straw but we think she's had a bit of a gunky eye for a week or two before that.

They eye is now totally closed in the mornings and needs a bit of cleaning before it uncrusts itself (the actual eye ball does not seem to look too good)... initially we used tea to wash the eye, but now use warm water, By The Way the cheek on the opposite side of the face is slightly swollen as well.

We have seen her once with her beak open (seems to point to breathing problems) but it's not common... but she seems perky (albeit she keeps bouncing of a tree trunk when running)... she is probably just coming into point of lay so we're hoping she's fit enough to fight what ever it is.

We've put her in isolation with her own food and water to check she is feeding okay...

Could be Coryza, I hope I am probably barking up the wrong tree but I would check that out personally. :( she will need antibiotics if it is.

I would tend to agree with Jellyhead after your last post General.  I sounds like it could be Coryza, and antibiotics would definitly be needed.

My ladies were prescribed antibiotics due to a nasty cold / chest infection -rattling chests and mucus everywhere -  they all had to be given Baytril tablets daily!! but it was far less problematic than we'd expected - grab chook (off perch in the evening is easiest) open beak and pop in pill - sorted...  Within a week they were all fine.  So dont worry, it does sound as though she may well need a course and better she's seen sooner rather than later.. you're advised not to use the eggs for a week afterwards  - hope she's ok
