what to plant for 1st earlies this year
« on: January 01, 2009, 17:18 »
hello and a happy new year to all, last year i had some good early spuds they were pentland javellin this year i would like to have another variety as well . My question is what early would you grow ,they must boil well or her indoors will be on my case . They wont be in the ground because after some sound advice of john i start them in big containers in the shed and greenhouse then move them out after the frost has gone  :tongue2:
If the early bird gets the worm how come the 2nd mouse to the trap gets the cheese ??

I tried Foremost for the first time this year and found them alright.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

I usually grow Rocket, I find them a tasty, waxy spud which mature fairly quickly.

Got to agree with the last two posts iv'e done rocket for the last
4 years splitting them between my polytunnel and a later planting
4 weeks later outdoors. Very good in both situations.

I have literally put my order in for a 25kg sack of organic Maris Bard earlies that will be delivered end of Jan for chitting over Feb and planting end of Feb/start of March.

I had them last year that I grew in dustbins and they were a very good potato.  I will try more fancy varieties next year once the plot is a little more organised.

I have heard that the Pilot ones are good!

Tasty first earlies, Red Duke of York, Dunluce, Ulster Classic is all I would eat but that is just my personal taste.
Visit my website and view my potato blog and videos.

I grew Winston after being recommended these by a friend. They were fantastic, wont grow any other varieties again. Get quite big as well if you leave them longer

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Tried International Kidney as a first early last year. Never again, the outside turned to mush and the inside was a bullet.  We had been told they were like Jersey Royals!
