Hows your onions and shallots?
« on: June 04, 2007, 20:39 »
Hi there,

been down the plot to find the onions and shallots going wild with growth and thickening up nicely, nipped a few seed head of bolting red onions but bar that should be a good year for onions,

hows yours? bigger? smaller? more bolt? or even the dreaded white rot?

other news this week, celery in, pumpkins in, brussels in, runners in, and dwarf beans in.

regards

onions shallots and garlic are all doing very nicely especially since I weeded them!  no bolters yet.

My onions are looking good ...

... so's the garlic.  With the exception of the elephant garlic, one failed to shoot at all, two have gone all mushy and one that looks ok.

If the sun is going to shine this weekend, I shall be pulling up my early white garlic.

I've only just planted my red onion plantlets and my salad onions are merely a wisp!

my onions went really thick like a huge spring onion with no discernible bulb at the bottom during the recent cold spell, "bull neck" my book said! now the good weather is back and with a couple of doses off tomato feed, there bulbing up nicely again!

They shouldn't be ready for ay least another month. Shouldn't worry about the brown bits, they just do that - well at least mine do!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

White & Red Onions, along with shallots are great - no bolters as yet.  I am however struggling with my spring onions - germination problems initially (took three packets to get a half row) and now very, very slow growing compared to last year.

Has anyone got any tips for improving them - another plot holder on my site suggested fish, blood and bone meal?

If you suspect an acute nitrogen shortage, try some nettle tea (or comfrey tea) for an organic remedy.  And I do say acute since seedlings don't usually suffer from it.  Dry April plus cold May are more likely, I'd have thought.

I do mine like the ruffmesiter_69, start them off in pots, I sown around 10 seeds to each pot as some wont germinate then once up and growing just drop them into place, no thinning required.

I have already pulled a few onions up plenty big enough for our need, and also had a  fair few bolt.  Do I just cut thier heads off?
