Concreted floor looks fab
« on: October 14, 2007, 20:25 »
I am so pleased with the results of this weekends work, it loks fab and I think this new floor will be a real time saver at cleaning out time. :D

The "Kids" have had 2 nights Shed and Breakfast while it was being done. :)   I  just got them used to going there and it was back to the house again!! funny how they get used to a thing it was interesting getting them to bed the last 2 days very good exercise!!! :(

They walked in tonight and went round and round inspecting each new perch the floor etc and chattering away "discussing" it all.  There was much fighting over the best perches(they're all the same really)  but all quiet now.  It all looks so much bigger and cleaner with a solid floor.

All in all a very good weekends work but I am exhausted

Congrats slowef!  I know some people say concrete floors are not good for various reasons, but at least they don't rot and rats can't gnaw their way in.  Our big hen house is concrete floor and OH is extending it by another 16ft, so that's another load of concrete we have to do!

But it'll be nice when its finished.

Thanks Auntie.

We have a major problem with rats here and thats why I went for it.  We have buried lots of chicken wire in the concrete as well so let the little b*g**s get through that!!.

Munty one for you what sort of traps could I use that are chicken safe please??

tunnel traps ....... take some 6inch by 1 inch planking yard long . nail one piece as a top over the edge of two side pieces . buy rat traps .bait with sweetcorn to start or place poison seed .. warfarin in the middle of the tunnel and place bricks on top . werks for me

Looks OK in your profile.  Perhaps there's a problem at Glitter HQ.  It might just apear back later

OR

Perhaps you've recently added the other link to your signature which has made your total signature too large (bits and bites and things) for the signature field

No not made any changes so maybe its them  :(

Could you use Gutter pipe semi buried and put stuff right in the middle so the chickens cant reach inside to get at it?  Maybe with a slab over each end to hold it down and keep chucks out?  Would it be safer to get a chap in to do it, although I think its an ongoing job so could get a bit pricey :?

Will I be finding lots of bodies around the place or do they die in their nests,  what if the animals eat them will they get poisoned as well, I have cats, visiting dogs etc.

Sorry so many questions

if you make the tunnels  your pets wil be fine i have dogs and cats .. the rats die in the holes with poison. you will find it difficult to use gutter pipes they are to narrow in the tube , you need access so id stick to the tunnels and the animals have never eaten a dead rat in my time

Ok thanks

do you semi-bury the tunnels or leave them above ground?  Whats the best place to put them, around the outside of the run, under a hedge etc?

I could see holes in the out door run but don't want to put them inside there just in case they got dislodged by the chickens.  My SIL dug the holes out and put spare concrete to block those up and we have cleared lots of undergrowth and also removed any old items the could hide in/under.

Sorry to be such a pain.  What damage can they cause to my birds apart from diseases they carry would they actually hurt them?  I HATE wild rats

put them again buildings as rats wil naturally stick to them and hedges .just place them on the surface .cover with bricks to hold em down   if you see a slime trail its the oils in a rats coat this will be great for putting a trap on .. holes you can just put the tunnel over the entrance and cover the end closest to the actual hole so the rat comes out down the tunnel ... i promise its an easier and cheaper option than calling in pest control .. i charge £70 a visit plus materials
