Tools for Starting Out

Hi Guys,

first post here!

I am going to view potential allotment sites this weekend. From what I gather I have a few to choose from but they all need some work.

I was hoping I could get some advice on the most basic tools I should get. I'm assuming a spade, fork, hoe and rake. Are there any others I need?

Also where should I buy them from? I dont want to spend a fortune but I dont want something that will fall apart in a couple of months.

Any help is welcome! Thanks in advance!

hi, well depends on what you have to clear, your right with what you have but you may have brambles to deal with so you will need some good cutters, a string line may be helpful and a good old bucket for putting the weeds in.

good luck.
keep your fingers green!!!   ian

Have a look around car boot sales for equiptment, I would add a few hand tools in there as well, then stuff like watering cans, something to kneel on and something to sit on.

Two stakes and a piece or stout string for marking out rows  :D

A dibber / bulb planter is handy for planting out all sorts.

A 12" measuring stick ... marked out in inches ...

Hi James and welcome  :) You'll need all of the above but I found when i got my plot there was masses of long grass so, on the advice of someone else on here I invested in an Azada, I'm so glad I did cause it's been a godsend and saved me so much time and is alot easier on the back!

Thanks,
Deb

gloves...especially for a lady :D  but for everyone, stops ur hands getting lathered so u cant see the skin ( which they will  very  soon) and protects from things like nettles or any chemical which u cant see.also stops blisters when digging.
also a handfork, i found its best to get on ur knees sometimes and loosen the soil to get the whole root of a weed out rather than pulling the top off and then rummaging in the soil for the rest of it.
thats about it from my very limited experience.
